Family Search
www.familysearch.orgA great site for searching for information for your family tree which is free. This service is provided through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and includes information for births/christenings, marriages and deaths for many countries. Census information is also available, with a wide range of new indexes being added due to the Indexing Project (which anyone can volunteer for - a very worthwhile project and very rewarding!)
There is a wide range of resources available on the website - free online classes, free family history software as well as a number of databases which are reasonably priced.
There are also Family History Centres around the world and their website allows you to search by country for their location.
I have used this website extensively for family research for Scotland, England and Australia and have found it very useful.
Rootsweb is a community where people are able to connect through their shared ancestry. There are a range of resources that can be used, including user-contributed databases, the World Connect Project, registry of surnames and forums.
Rootsweb
www.rootsweb.ancestry.comI have only used this on a few occasions personally and am aware that many of my ancestors are included in the World Connect Project which has helped me with titbits of information to move my geneology projects on further.
It is important to note that the data is contributed by other users, so you should always try to confirm the information with official records. But it does often help to put you in the right direction.
Rootweb is also part of the www.ancestry.com community.
