www.ausbdm.org This site allows people to share birth, death and marriage information for Australia and New Zealand. There are currently almost 45,000 records shared on this site, with over 36,000 of these being Australian records.
I have not used this site personally for my own family research as I have just recently found it and have not been concentrating on the Australian branch of the tree, but it would definitely be worth a try before purchasing any Australasian records.
